MMABSE THROUGH THE DECADES

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Alliance of Black School Educators, better known as MMABSE, was forged in advocacy. There were no educational organizations in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1960s with a mission to enhance and facilitate quality education for all students, particularly those of African descent. MMABSE responded to a need for action and support.

1969
Black administrators in the Milwaukee Public Schools began networking to address conditions affecting the education of black children in MPS.
1970
First Fall Conference held
1971
Black administrators formalized as Black Administrators Council (BAC) to strengthen the position of the few black administrators in MPS
1972
BAC renamed Black Administrators and Supervisors Council (BASC)
1983
BASC affiliated with the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) and became Metropolitan Milwaukee Alliance of Black School Educators (MMABSE) – to include teachers
1983
Bylaws re-written
1986
Established a quarterly, professional newsletter, THE IMPACT

Established the Burns-Starms Scholarship Fund

The computerized membership list and activated a building representative structure

First Student Encouragement Awards recognizing “at-risk” students
